Book Review: Scuba Diving Safety by Dan Orr & Eric Douglas

Recommendation: For divers of any level of experience or training.

Reference texts can be so boring or cumbersome that they end up sitting on a shelf gathering the dust of good intentions. This reference book however is not one of those.

One of the aspects I particularly like about this book is the inclusion of descriptions of real incidents scattered throughout the book that reinforce a particular point being made. These real incidents are drawn largely from the personal experiences of the authors, and one cannot help but admire those who have the confidence to publicly admit their mistakes and encourage others to learn from them.

The authors canvass a broad range of issues from the very basic of recognising panic in another diver to environmental considerations. The lessons are short and easily digestible, and can be read in any order that interest takes the reader.

This book would also be suitable for younger divers as a reminder of those important fundamental safety principles of diving.
