Diving Jervis Bay: Spider Cave

Situated south of Bowen Island with a maximum depth of 24m, Spider Cave is an impressive cave cutting deep into the cliffs. The entrance is deepish, in 24m, with a stony rocky bottom, meaning that the cave is relatively free of silting up problems.

Cutting 30m or so into the cliffs, maintaining depths in excess of 20m, Spider Cave has many areas where its possible to surface in, with some blocked by a large boulder. At the end of the cave proper, a submerged tunnel continues deeper into the cliffs, but this is an area prone to surge, and proper cave diving techniques are recommended.

Turning to exit the cave, the silhouette of the entrance is quite spectacular, and for photographers using natural light setups can make a wonderful frame for the abundant marine life in the area.

Outside Spider Cave, the diver will find a good sponge gardens and rocky reef attracting the usual amount of great growth to be found down under at JB.
