Diving Jervis Bay
About 2.5 hours south of Sydney is the magnificent Jervis Bay, possibly one of the world’s best temperate water diving locations. With several professional operators locally, the diving community is well catered for.
Jervis Bay is built around the ocean, with a local economy based on diving and fishing charters, as well as a large Naval base.
Most diving around “JB” is boat diving, with many of the more popular sites across the bay from the main town of Huskisson. Shore diving is possible at Hyams Beach and Green Patch, but the pick of diving is definitely boat diving.
JB can offer diving in almost any conditions with sites inside the bay like The Docks, Long Cave and various locations around Bowen Island sheltered from northerly and southerly wind conditions respectively.
Although these sites are great, the best diving has to be outside, with a series of cave, gutters, swimthroughs, natural arches providing spectacular underwater scenery, mixed with a huge variety of sealife and clear water. Some of the leading sites outside the Bay include Smugglers Cave, Crocodile Head, The Arch, The Labyrinth, Drum and Drumsticks, Stoney Creek, Spider Cave, as well a large seal colony at Steamers Beach.
Jervis Bay is also lucky to have several dive operators. A store located in the township of Huskisson operate day charters to various locations inside and around the bay, and there is also a liveaboard, Oceantrek, operating in the Bay.
